Challenge 5 – Mothering Sunday (UK)
Happy Mother’s Day
Today is all about celebrating and honouring the mother, as well as motherhood, maternal connections and the influence of mother in society.
Exercise
1. If you’re lucky enough to be in the same place as your mother or person who you see in that role, sit them down, make them a cup of tea and draw them.Talk to them about things that have happened in the past, compliment them about their interesting features. Take time to be together. If the drawing isn’t that great you don’t have to share it with them, it’s the being together that’s important.
2. If you can’t be with them or they are no longer of this world, then use a photo or think back to a memory that you shared with them that has had a positive impact on your life. Use it as a starting point to draw, concentrate on the thoughts behind the shared moment rather than exactly reproducing it. Give yourself some time to say thank you for them bringing you into this world. I’ve included five drawings around motherhood & pregnancy including mine, Dorothea Tanning, Louise Bourgeois, Gustav Klimt & David Hockney as today’s examples..
